Although edibles were not included when recreational cannabis became legal, the demand for them is still strong. Many have found edibles to be an effective & alternative way to regulate pain. The effects of edibles differ from the effects of smoking Cannabis in several ways; edibles typically create more of a body-centred sensation; as opposed to the heady effects of smoking Cannabis. This is one of the reasons why edibles are so wonderful for helping people manage pain. Edibles also last longer than smoking, with effects lasting 2-8 hours depending on the amount ingested.
Some like to eat edibles in the evening, as they provide such a relaxing and sedating experience. Eating fatty foods will help to enhance the effects of edibles, as THC-molecules bind to fat. If you would like to decrease the effects we would suggest taking some Vitamin C or eating a spoonful of freshly cracked pepper (both tried-and-true natural methods of counteracting the psychoactive effects of Cannabis). We would suggest starting off at a low-dose of 1-2.5mgs of THC (for first-time users, or 15mgs-30mgs THC (for seasoned consumers), in the evening when you are all done your daily activities and can fully relax.
Typically edibles take around 45 minutes to kick in, so bear that in mind when you choose to eat them. Also, if you have recently eaten a full-meal they will take a little longer as your body has extra-digesting to do. A good rule of thumb is to start low and go slow.
Below are some things to think about when selecting, consuming, and storing your edibles.
- What is your personal tolerance level? Have you eaten THC before? How much THC does the item as a whole contain?
- Does it specify how many grams of THC are present?
If the manufacturer has included both, you can easily calculate how much each desired dose will be. If you can’t be sure of the mg’s of THC present, contemplate using a product that does.
- Are there any allergens present?
If you have food allergies, watch out for any ingredients that could cause
- Have you recently consumed alcohol or other substances?
- Are you on any other medications?
Always consult a physician to make sure there won’t be dangerous interactions.
- Where will you be when you consume?
Surrounding yourself with people you trust and feel safe with is always best.
- How much time have you given yourself for the experience?
Always make sure to allow plenty of time for effects to be felt (between 30-90+ minutes), and dissipate (can be different for each person). This is especially important when re-dosing! Remember, start low and go slow.
- Where do you keep your edibles?
- Are they out of the reach of curious children and pets?
It’s recommended they be kept in something secure that can be locked.
- Does your edible specify to store at room temperature or in the fridge?
Melting can cause disbursement of THC in some products, meaning each piece may no longer have the same intended amounts of THC.
